African Great Lakes

Key Facts
Meet the Giant Lakes!
Imagine lakes so big they look like oceans! The African Great Lakes are a super-special group of lakes found in Africa. They are part of a giant crack in the Earth called the Rift Valley. These lakes are like watery giants, holding a HUGE amount of fresh water. In fact, they hold about one-quarter of all the fresh water on our whole planet that isn't frozen!
Watery Wonders and Wobbly Lands
These lakes are like watery playgrounds for amazing animals, especially fish! About 10 out of every 100 fish species in the whole world live here. Some of these lakes are super deep, like Lake Tanganyika, which is deeper than a skyscraper is tall! The land around them is always moving a tiny bit because of the Rift Valley, like a slow-motion earthquake.
Home to Many Countries!
Lots of countries share these amazing lakes. Countries like Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, and others are neighbors to these giant bodies of water. People live all around the lakes, and the water is super important for them. It gives them fish to eat and ways to travel. It's like a giant, shared swimming pool for many nations!
Super Cool Lake Facts!
Did you know Lake Victoria is the second-biggest freshwater lake in the world by size? That's bigger than many countries! Lake Turkana is special too because it's the biggest permanent lake in a desert and it's an alkaline lake, which means it's a bit like soapy water. These lakes are truly incredible natural wonders!
