Where is Burundi?

Burundi is a country tucked away in the heart of Africa, like a secret treasure! It doesn't have any oceans nearby, making it a 'landlocked' country. It's surrounded by other countries: Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and south, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west.

A giant, beautiful lake called Lake Tanganyika hugs its southwestern edge. Think of it as a cozy spot nestled between its neighbors, with a big blue friend to play with!

A Land of Green Hills!

Burundi is famous for its amazing green hills that roll like giant waves. Most people live in small villages surrounded by farms where they grow food. It's a very green place, but sometimes the trees disappear, which makes it hard for animals and the land. The weather is usually warm, like a sunny day at the park, but it can rain a lot, helping all the plants grow tall and strong.

Long, Long Ago...

People have lived in Burundi for hundreds and hundreds of years! For a long time, it was a kingdom ruled by kings. Then, other countries like Germany and Belgium took care of Burundi for a while. Finally, in 1962, Burundi became its own independent country, like when you get to make your own choices! It has had a few different ways of being led since then, with leaders chosen by the people.

What Do People Do?

Most people in Burundi are farmers, growing yummy food like beans and bananas. They also raise animals. It's a place where families work together a lot. The main city is called Bujumbura, which is busy with shops and people. Kids in Burundi go to school to learn, just like you! They speak a special language called Kirundi, and also French and English.
