The Amazing Great Lakes!

Imagine five enormous lakes, so big they look like inland seas! These are the Great Lakes: Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario. They are connected like a giant water highway. A super long time ago, giant ice sheets, like enormous frozen blankets, covered the land. When they melted, they carved out huge dips in the ground. These dips filled up with water from the melting ice, creating the Great Lakes we see today! It's like when you dig a hole in the sand at the beach and it fills with water.

These lakes are super special because they are filled with fresh water, not salty ocean water. They hold about 21% of all the fresh water on the whole planet! People love to visit the Great Lakes! They can go boating, fishing, and swimming. Big ships also travel on the lakes, carrying goods from place to place. Many big cities, like Chicago and Toronto, are built right on the shores of these amazing lakes. They are super important for fun and for helping people travel and trade.
