Lake Turkana: The Wacky Water Hole!

Lake Turkana is a super-duper big lake in a hot, dry place called a desert. It's so big, it stretches across two countries, Kenya and Ethiopia! It's the largest desert lake that's always there, and it's also the saltiest lake that's not in the ocean.

Think of it like a giant, warm swimming pool, but way bigger and with salty water that tastes a bit funny. It's a special place where lots of amazing animals live.

This lake is a busy place for animals! Big, scaly Nile crocodiles love to hang out on the shores, basking in the sun. They can be as long as a school bus!

The rocky parts of the lake are home to scorpions and vipers, which are types of snakes. Even though the water is salty, there are lots of fish, which is great for the animals and for people who like to fish. It's a wild and wonderful home for many creatures.

Lake Turkana doesn't have a river flowing out of it, so the only way water leaves is by evaporating into the sky. This means the lake's size can change a lot! Sometimes it gets smaller, and sometimes it gets bigger.

The weather here is also very hot and windy, with sudden storms that can be a bit scary. The land around the lake is made of volcanic rocks, and one island in the lake is even an active volcano that puffs out steam!

Guess what? This area is like a treasure chest for scientists! They have found lots of fossils, which are like ancient bones, of early humans and animals that lived millions of years ago. It helps us understand how people and creatures have changed over a very, very long time. So, Lake Turkana isn't just a big lake, it's also a place that tells us stories about our planet's past!
