Lake Malawi: The Rainbow Fish Lake!

Imagine a bathtub so big it's like a whole country! That's Lake Malawi, one of the biggest freshwater lakes in the world. It's so long, it stretches across three countries: Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania. This amazing lake is part of a huge crack in the Earth called the East African Rift. It's like a giant scar that filled up with water!

Lake Malawi is like a super-duper aquarium! It has more kinds of fish than any other lake on the planet – over 700 different kinds! Many of these fish are called cichlids, and they come in all sorts of amazing colors, like a rainbow. Some scientists even think new kinds of fish are still being discovered there!

This lake has a super strange secret: its water layers don't mix! The top layer of water is warm and fresh, while the bottom layer is cold and salty. They stay separate, like oil and water. This is called a meromictic lake, and it helps create a special home for all those unique fish.

Because Lake Malawi is so special, parts of it are protected. In Malawi, there's a national park just for the lake! And in Mozambique, a big part of the lake is a special reserve. This helps keep the water clean and safe for all the amazing fish that live there.
