Lake Victoria
Key Facts
Africa's Gigantic Water Bowl!
Lake Victoria is like a super-duper big bathtub for Africa! It's the biggest lake on the whole continent, and it's so wide, it's like having 23,000 soccer fields all filled with water side-by-side! It's also the biggest lake in the world that's near the middle of the Earth, where it's usually warm.
This giant lake is shared by three countries: Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya. It's not a super deep lake, more like a big puddle compared to some oceans, but it holds a LOT of water!
Where Does All This Water Come From?
This enormous lake sits in a shallow dip in the land, like a giant bowl. Lots of rivers and rain fill it up! Even though it's huge, it's not as deep as some other big lakes.
The deepest part is only about as deep as a 10-story building is tall. The edge of the lake, called the shoreline, is super long, almost like walking around a big city! Sometimes, you can even find islands floating in the water.
Fishy Friends and Visitors!
Lake Victoria is a super special home for many kinds of fish that you can't find anywhere else in the whole world! These fish are like unique treasures. But sometimes, new fish, like the Nile perch, swim into the lake.
These new fish can eat the old fish, and sadly, some of the special fish have disappeared because of them. It's important to protect all the different kinds of life living in the lake.
Life by the Big Blue
People live all around the edges of Lake Victoria. They use the water for drinking, for fishing, and for traveling on boats. The lake is a very important place for the people who live nearby.
It gives them food and helps them travel between places. Imagine if your town had a giant lake right next to it that helped everyone! That's how important Lake Victoria is to the people of Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya.
