West Indies Federation

Once upon a time, some islands in the sunny Caribbean Sea decided to team up. These islands were part of a big group called the British Empire. They wanted to become one big, independent country, like a giant island nation!

Think of it like a group of friends deciding to build the coolest treehouse ever, all together. This team-up was called the West Indies Federation. It was like a special club for islands that wanted to be stronger together.

The islands that wanted to join this super team were places like Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbados. There were also many smaller islands, like those in the Leeward and Windward Islands. They all gathered in a special place called Port of Spain, in Trinidad and Tobago, which was like their team's headquarters.

It was a big dream for these islands to become one united country, free to make their own rules.

This island team-up was super important because it was a big step towards independence for these places. They wanted to be like Canada or Australia, which are big countries that used to be part of the British Empire but are now their own nations. The Federation was a way for them to show they could govern themselves and stand tall on their own.

It was a bold idea for these islands to try and become one big, powerful nation.

Sadly, this amazing island team didn't last very long. It was like the friends couldn't agree on how to build the treehouse! The islands had different ideas about how to run their new country.

Because they couldn't agree, the Federation broke apart after only a few years. Even though the dream didn't work out, many of these islands later became their own independent countries, like Jamaica and Barbados.
