Key Facts
The Longest Mountain Snake Ever!
The Andes Mountains are like a super-duper long backbone for South America. They are the longest mountain range on land in the whole world! They stretch for about 5,500 miles, which is longer than driving across the United States! These mountains are so tall, some of their tops are covered in snow all year round. They are home to amazing animals and incredible views.
Where the Clouds Live!
These mountains are so high, they touch the sky! Some peaks are over 13,000 feet tall, which is like stacking 100 school buses on top of each other! Because they are so high, the air is thin and it can be very cold. Some parts are super dry, like a desert, while other parts get lots and lots of rain. It's like having different weather zones all in one giant mountain range!
Giants and Super-Tall Spots!
The Andes have some of the tallest mountains outside of Asia. The highest one is called Aconcagua, and it's almost 7,000 meters (that's over 22,000 feet!) tall. That's taller than any mountain you've ever seen! Also, one mountain peak called Chimborazo is actually the farthest point from the center of the Earth because our planet is a little bit fatter in the middle. How cool is that?!
Homes in the Sky!
Even though the Andes are full of tall peaks, people have built amazing cities high up on plateaus. These are flat areas of land high in the mountains. Some of these cities are so high, they are some of the highest cities in the world! People live and work here, and they have learned to live with the thin air and the amazing mountain views. It's a very special place to call home.
