The Super-Long Mountain Spine!
The American Cordillera is like a super-duper long necklace of mountains that runs all the way down the western sides of North and South America. It's so long, it's like a giant backbone for the land! It connects mountains from the very top of North America all the way to the bottom of South America. It's an almost unbroken line of rocky peaks and tall volcanoes.
Home to the Tallest Peak!
This incredible mountain chain is home to some of the highest places on Earth! The very tallest peak in the entire Cordillera is called Aconcagua. It's so high, it's like trying to climb to the top of a skyscraper that's taller than 30 Empire State Buildings stacked on top of each other! It's a truly gigantic mountain.
A Fiery Ring of Mountains!
Guess what? The American Cordillera is also part of a super famous fiery circle around the Pacific Ocean called the Ring of Fire! Many of the mountains in the Cordillera are volcanoes. When these volcanoes erupt, they can be very powerful, like a giant burp from the Earth! This makes the Cordillera a very exciting place.
