Meet the Stegosaurus!

Stegosaurus was a giant dinosaur that lived a super long time ago, during the Jurassic period. It was about as long as a school bus and as tall as a giraffe! Its name means 'roof lizard' because of the big, flat plates that grew on its back. These plates might have helped it stay cool or maybe looked scary to other dinosaurs.

What's for Dinner?

Stegosaurus was a plant-eater, which means it munched on leaves, ferns, and other yummy plants. It had a small head and a simple brain, but it had a very strong body and a tail with four sharp spikes called a thagomizer. It probably used its tail to swing at any hungry dinosaurs that tried to bother it. It was a gentle giant, mostly minding its own business and eating plants.

Spiky Tail Power!

The most famous part of Stegosaurus is its tail! It had four long, pointy spikes that could be up to 2 feet long. Scientists think Stegosaurus used its tail like a whip to defend itself from predators like Allosaurus. Imagine a dinosaur swinging its tail with those sharp spikes โ€“ it would make any attacker think twice!

Where Did They Roam?

Stegosaurus lived in what is now North America, in places like Colorado and Wyoming. They lived in forests and open plains, where there were plenty of plants to eat. They were around for a long time, but they disappeared before the Tyrannosaurus Rex even showed up on the scene!
