Key Facts
Welcome to the Cretaceous World!
The Cretaceous was a super long time ago, even before the dinosaurs we know from movies! It lasted for about 77 million years, which is longer than any other time period. The name 'Cretaceous' comes from a special kind of rock called chalk, which is like the stuff you might use at school, but it was made from tiny sea creatures back then. This was the last big chapter of the 'Age of Dinosaurs'.
Dinosaurs and Deep Seas!
During the Cretaceous, dinosaurs were the kings of the land! But the oceans were busy too. Giant sea creatures swam in warm, shallow seas that covered lots of the land. Imagine a world without much ice, where forests grew all the way to the very top and bottom of the Earth. It was a very different planet from the one we live on today, with lots of new plants and animals appearing.
New Life Blooms!
Guess what? The Cretaceous is when many of the plants and animals we see today first showed up! Flowering plants, like the pretty flowers in a garden, appeared and started to spread everywhere. Also, early versions of mammals, like tiny mice, and birds began to appear. It was a time of big changes, with new life popping up all over the place.
The Big Goodbye!
But all good things must come to an end. The Cretaceous period finished with a HUGE event that wiped out many animals, including the non-flying dinosaurs. Scientists think a giant space rock, like a super-sized asteroid, crashed into the Earth. This big crash changed the world so much that many creatures couldn't survive anymore. It was a dramatic end to a very long and exciting time.
