Key Facts
Meet the Gigantic River!
Imagine a river that's super long, about 1,450 miles! That's like driving from New York City all the way to Denver, Colorado, and then some! This amazing river starts way up high in the Rocky Mountains and flows all the way to the big ocean.
It's so big, it's the 5th longest river in the United States. It's called the Colorado River because the Spanish explorers thought it looked reddish, like it was carrying a lot of red mud. Wow!
A River's Wild Ride!
The Colorado River doesn't just flow smoothly; it goes on an incredible adventure! It rushes through giant canyons, like the super famous Grand Canyon, which is so deep it's taller than 100 school buses stacked up! It also has exciting whitewater rapids that thrill brave kayakers.
Along its journey, it passes through eleven national parks, which are like special nature playgrounds for everyone to enjoy. It's a busy river with lots to see!
Water for Everyone!
Even though the land around the Colorado River is very dry, this river is like a superhero bringing water to about 40 million people! That's more people than live in the entire state of California! People use the river's water for drinking and to help grow yummy food on farms.
Big dams, like giant bathtubs, hold back the water so it can be used when it's needed most. It's a very important job for this river!
Ancient Homes and Modern Life
People have lived by the Colorado River for thousands of years, even before castles were built in Europe! They learned how to farm and live using the river's water. Today, many cities and towns rely on the river.
But sometimes, there isn't enough water for everyone because so many people use it, and the weather has been dry. This makes people think hard about how to share the river's precious water fairly.
