Key Facts
Where is Nevada?
Nevada is a big state in the western part of the United States. Imagine a giant sandbox with mountains! It doesn't touch any oceans, making it landlocked.
It has neighbors like California, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, and Arizona. Most people in Nevada live in one big area called Clark County, where the famous city of Las Vegas is. Nevada's capital city is Carson City, which is much smaller than Las Vegas.
The Silver State's Treasures!
Nevada is called the "Silver State" because people found lots and lots of silver there a long time ago. This silver helped the country a lot! It's also known as the "Battle Born State" because it became a state when the country was fighting a big war called the Civil War.
The name Nevada comes from a Spanish word that means "snowy," because the tall mountains often have snow on top, even when it's warm down below!
Dry and Dusty Deserts!
Much of Nevada is a desert, which means it's very dry and doesn't get much rain. It's like the driest state in the whole country! You'll find big deserts like the Mojave Desert and a huge area called the Great Basin.
Even though it's dry, there are still amazing mountains, some of which are called "sky islands" because they are like islands of trees and plants high up in the dry air. Nevada also gets a lot of sunshine!
Who Lives Here?
Long before people from other countries came, Native American tribes like the Paiute, Shoshone, and Washoe people lived in Nevada. They knew the land very well. Later, explorers from Spain came and gave the state its name. Today, Nevada is home to many people who work in different jobs, like helping tourists, mining for metals, and making new things like electric car parts.
