Where is Namibia?
Namibia is a super big country way down in the southern part of Africa. It has a long coastline along the big, blue Atlantic Ocean on one side. On other sides, it's neighbors with countries like Angola, Zambia, Botswana, and South Africa. Its capital city, where lots of people live and work, is called Windhoek. It's like the heart of the country!
A Land of Dry Wonders!
Namibia is the driest country in all of Africa south of the Sahara Desert. That means it gets very little rain! It has amazing deserts, like the famous Namib Desert, which is one of the oldest deserts in the world. You can find huge sand dunes there, some as tall as a big building! It's a very special place with unique plants and animals that are super good at surviving in the dry heat.
Long, Long Ago...
People have lived in Namibia for thousands and thousands of years! Ancient groups like the San and Khoi people were some of the very first. Later, other groups of people moved in. For a long time, it was a German colony called German South West Africa. Then, after a big war, South Africa took charge. Finally, on March 21, 1990, Namibia became its own independent country. Wow!
What Do People Do There?
Even though it's dry, Namibia has lots of important things. People mine for shiny diamonds and other valuable metals. Tourism is also a big deal because the country has such beautiful and unique landscapes, like the giant sand dunes and amazing wildlife. Many people also work in farming, raising animals like cattle and sheep. It's a country with a lot of natural treasures!
