Geography
Angola is a country in southern Africa that stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the interior. It is about 1.2 million square kilometers, making it the seventh‑largest country on the continent. The capital city, Luanda, sits on the coast and is the main hub for trade and culture.
Angola’s landscape is diverse: the coast has sandy beaches, the interior has mountains, plateaus, and the Kalahari Desert in the far south. Rivers such as the Congo and the Cuando flow through the country, providing water for people and wildlife.
History
Portuguese explorers first reached Angola in the 16th century and claimed the land for Portugal. For many years, Angola was part of the Portuguese Empire and was known for its role in the Atlantic slave trade. In 1975, after a long struggle, Angola gained independence and became a sovereign nation.
The new country faced a long civil war that lasted until 2002, caused by rival political groups fighting for control. Since the end of the war, Angola has worked to rebuild its cities, roads, and schools, and it is now a growing economy.
Culture & Society
Angola has many different ethnic groups, with the largest being the Ovimbundu, Kimbundu, and Bakongo. People speak Portuguese, the official language, as well as several local languages. Music is an important part of Angolan life; styles like Semba and Kizomba are popular dance songs that people enjoy in festivals and parties. Traditional clothing often features bright colors and patterns.
Angolan cuisine includes dishes such as funge, a thick cornmeal porridge, and moamba, a stew made with meat or fish and palm oil. Family and community are central values in everyday life.
Economy & Politics
Angola’s economy is largely based on oil and natural resources. It is one of the world’s biggest producers of crude oil, and it also has large deposits of diamonds, copper, and cobalt. The government uses the money from these resources to pay for public services like health care and education.
Politically, Angola is a presidential republic, meaning the president is both the head of state and government. Since 1992, the country has held free elections, and the political system works with a multi‑party parliament.
