Apartheid

Apartheid was a system in a country called South Africa that made rules to keep people separated. It was like having different playgrounds for different kids, but way, way more serious. People with white skin had all the good stuff, like the best schools and jobs, while people with darker skin were treated unfairly.

They couldn't live in the same neighborhoods, go to the same schools, or even use the same swimming pools. It was a very sad and unfair time.

Apartheid officially started in 1948, which is a long, long time ago, even before your parents were born! For many years, people in South Africa lived under these unfair rules. It was like a dark cloud hanging over the country. But brave people fought against it, and finally, in 1994, the rules of Apartheid were ended. It took a lot of courage and hard work to make things fair again.

Apartheid was bad because it hurt so many people. It made them feel sad, angry, and like they weren't important. Imagine if you were told you couldn't play with your best friend just because of how you looked. That's how many people felt. It also meant that people with darker skin didn't get the same chances to learn and grow. This unfairness made the whole country suffer.

Lots of people around the world knew Apartheid was wrong. They protested and refused to buy things from South Africa. Inside South Africa, brave leaders like Nelson Mandela spoke out against the unfair laws, even though they were put in jail for it. Eventually, the government had to listen. They changed the laws, and everyone got to vote and be treated equally. It was a huge victory for fairness!
