Illinois

Imagine a giant map of the United States. Illinois is right in the middle, in a part called the Midwest. It's shaped a bit like a mitten! To its northeast, it has a giant bathtub called Lake Michigan. On its west side, a super long river called the Mississippi River flows. And to the south, two more rivers, the Wabash and Ohio, hug its edges. It's a place with lots of water nearby!

Illinois is famous for its amazing farms! The soil is super rich, like the best chocolate cake mix. This means farmers can grow lots of yummy food. Think corn taller than your dad and soybeans that help make lots of things. This farmland is so good that it helps feed people all over the country and even in other countries too!

Illinois has a really big city called Chicago, which is like a giant playground of buildings and fun things to do. It's on the edge of Lake Michigan. But Illinois also has a capital city called Springfield, which is more in the middle of the state. It's a place where important decisions are made for everyone in Illinois.

Did you know that three U.S. Presidents lived in Illinois? Abraham Lincoln, who was president a long, long time ago, is super famous here. There's even a special museum about him! Illinois also has ancient mounds built by people who lived there thousands of years ago. It's a state with stories from the past and exciting things happening now.
