America's Giant Water Slide!

Imagine a giant water slide that's longer than 300 football fields stacked end-to-end! That’s kind of like the Mississippi River. It starts way up north in a lake called Itasca and flows all the way down to the warm Gulf of Mexico.

It’s so big that it touches 10 different states, like a super long hug across the country. It's the second-longest river in the United States, which is a really, really big country!

Home to Ancient Stories

Long, long ago, even before your grandparents were born, Native American people lived all along this amazing river. They fished, hunted, and even built big cities made of earth mounds! Later, explorers and settlers came in boats, using the river like a road to travel and build new homes. The river was like a big, watery border between different lands, and it helped people share news and goods.

A Busy Highway for Boats!

This river is like a super busy highway, but instead of cars, big boats and barges zoom along! For hundreds of years, people have used it to move important things like food and supplies. In the old days, cool steamboats with big paddle wheels chugged up and down.

Today, even bigger boats carry tons of stuff, helping farms and factories send their products all over the country and even to other parts of the world.

Nature's Big Helper (and a Little Messy!)

The Mississippi River helps make the land around it super fertile, which is great for growing yummy food. But sometimes, all the farms and cities nearby can make the water a bit dirty. Scientists are working hard to keep the river clean and healthy for all the fish and animals that call it home, and for us too!
