Key Facts
Welcome to the Land of Big Water!
Michigan is a super cool place in the United States that's shaped like a mitten! It's not just one piece of land, but two big parts called peninsulas. The Lower Peninsula is where most people live, and it stretches out like a hand.
The Upper Peninsula is way up north and is covered in forests. Michigan is special because it's surrounded by four of the five Great Lakes, which are like giant freshwater oceans! This means Michigan has more shoreline than any other state in the whole country.
That's a LOT of beaches and fun water activities!
A Long, Long Time Ago...
Long before people built houses and schools, Native American tribes like the Ojibwe lived in Michigan. They called the land 'Mishigami,' which means 'large water.' Later, French explorers came and built forts. Then, the British took over, and finally, Michigan became part of the United States.
It officially became a state in 1837. Over time, people from all over the world came to Michigan, especially because it became famous for making cars!
What Do People Do in Michigan?
Michigan is famous for making cars! Big companies like Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler have their headquarters here. But that's not all!
Michigan also has lots of forests, so people work in logging and enjoy hiking and camping. There are also farms growing yummy food. And guess what?
Michigan has tons of inland lakes, so fishing and boating are super popular. It's a place with lots of different jobs and fun things to do outdoors.
Michigan's Awesome Leaders!
Every state needs leaders to help it run, and Michigan is no different! The capital city, where the government works, is called Lansing. But the biggest and busiest city in Michigan is Detroit.
Detroit is known as the 'Motor City' because of all the car factories. People in Michigan vote for their leaders, just like in other parts of the country. They make sure things like schools and roads are taken care of for everyone.
