Key Facts
Where is Pennsylvania?
Imagine a giant puzzle piece in the United States! Pennsylvania is located in the northeastern part of the country. It's like a big hug, surrounded by other states and even a Great Lake called Lake Erie. To its east, the Delaware River flows, and to its south, Maryland and West Virginia are neighbors. It's a place with lots of different landscapes, from tall mountains to wide rivers.
A Land of Mountains and Forests!
Pennsylvania has some super cool natural features. The Appalachian Mountains run right through the middle, like a giant, bumpy backbone! Almost 60% of the state is covered in forests, which means lots of trees for animals to live in and for us to enjoy.
Even though it doesn't touch the ocean, it has lots of water from Lake Erie and the Delaware River, which is like having a giant bathtub and a long, flowing river!
From Olden Times to Today!
Long, long ago, Native American tribes lived here. Then, people from Sweden and England came. William Penn, who the state is named after, wanted a place where everyone could be treated fairly and believe what they wanted.
Pennsylvania was super important when America was just starting. The Declaration of Independence, the paper that said America was free, was signed here! It's also famous for big battles like the Battle of Gettysburg.
Big Cities and Busy People!
Pennsylvania is a very popular place to live! Over 13 million people call it home, making it one of the most crowded states. The biggest city is Philadelphia, where the famous Liberty Bell is. Another big city is Pittsburgh, known for its bridges. People in Pennsylvania work in many different jobs, from making things in factories to helping in schools and hospitals.
