Al-Tanf

Al-Tanf is situated in a starkly remote and arid region of the Syrian Desert, within the Rif Dimashq Governorate. Its geographical isolation is profound, characterized by vast expanses of sand and rock, with extreme temperature fluctuations between seasons and minimal precipitation. The establishment of a significant U.S. and allied European military presence at Al-Tanf began in early 2016 amidst the complex Syrian Civil War. Initially, the base served as a training ground for the New Syrian Army, an opposition group focused on combating the Islamic State (ISIS). Following the dissolution and reformation of this group into the Revolutionary Commando Army (Maghawir al-Thawra), the base continued its mission.

As of 2025, Al-Tanf remains the sole U.S. military installation outside of northeastern Syria, hosting a contingent of at least 200 U.S. soldiers operating under the banner of the Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR).

This zone has also been associated with the Rukban refugee camp, which housed internally displaced Syrians fleeing conflict.
