Where the Land is Thirsty!

Deserts are super dry places where it hardly ever rains. Think of your water bottle – a desert is like a giant one that’s almost always empty! About one-third of the Earth is like this. Some deserts are super hot, but guess what? Some are freezing cold, like the North and South Poles! These are called polar deserts. They are still super dry, with hardly any rain or snow.

Rock Stars and Sand Sculptures!

The sun and wind are like sculptors in the desert. Big temperature changes between day and night make rocks crack, just like a cookie breaking. Wind blows sand around, making amazing shapes called dunes, like giant sand hills on a beach.

Sometimes, the wind is so strong it carries dust and sand, making a sandstorm! Other deserts are flat and rocky, with smooth stones that look like a giant puzzle.

Desert Superheroes!

Plants and animals in deserts are like superheroes with special powers! Cacti have pointy spines instead of leaves to save water and stop animals from eating them. Some tiny plants pop up, bloom, and disappear super fast after a rare rain.

Animals are often awake at night when it's cooler. They get water from the food they eat and have super-smart ways to hold onto every drop. Some even sleep through the hottest, driest times!

Oases: Desert Surprise!

Even in the driest places, life can find a way! Sometimes, water is hidden underground. When this water comes to the surface, it creates an oasis – a green, watery spot in the middle of the dry land.

People and animals love oases because they have water and plants. For a long time, people have traveled across deserts, using camels to carry goods like salt and gold. Deserts can also be great for catching sunshine to make energy!
