Who Are the Shawnee?

Imagine a group of people who are called the Shawnee! They are Native American people who have lived in North America for a very, very long time. Their language sounds like a special song, and it's called Shawnee. It's part of a big family of languages called Algonquian. The Shawnee people have a fascinating history of moving around, like explorers on an adventure!

Where Did They Call Home?

A long, long time ago, the Shawnee people's home was probably in a place called southern Ohio. But guess what? They didn't stay in just one spot! Over many years, they moved to places like Ohio, Illinois, and even Pennsylvania. It was like they were exploring new playgrounds! Sometimes they lived near other Native American groups, sharing stories and learning from each other.

Adventures and New Lands

The Shawnee people had to move many times. In the 1800s, the government made them move to lands far away, west of a giant river called the Mississippi. This was a tough time for them. Later, they ended up in a place that is now called Oklahoma. Even though they moved, they always remembered their history and their families.

Shawnee Today!

Today, the Shawnee people are still here! They have three main groups, called tribes, that are all in Oklahoma. These tribes are the Absentee-Shawnee Tribe, the Eastern Shawnee Tribe, and the Shawnee Tribe. They are proud of their heritage and continue to share their culture and stories with the world. It's wonderful that their traditions live on!
