Key Facts
Where is North Dakota?
Imagine a giant map of the United States. North Dakota is way up north, like the top of a teddy bear's head! It's bordered by Canada to the north and other states like Minnesota and South Dakota.
It's a super big state, the 19th largest, but not many people live there. It's mostly flat and grassy, like a giant playground called the Great Plains. You'll see farms and wide-open fields stretching as far as your eyes can see!
Who Lived Here First?
Long, long ago, before any towns or cities, Native American tribes like the Dakota, Sioux, Mandan, and Hidatsa called this land home. They lived along the big Missouri River and in the forests. They knew all the best places to find food and build their homes.
Later, explorers came looking for furs, and then people from all over came to farm the land. It's a place with a rich history of many different people living together.
What's it Like Today?
Today, North Dakota is known for its farms, especially wheat farms that look like a golden carpet. But guess what? There are also big underground treasures!
People found lots of oil, which helps the state have jobs and grow. The capital city is Bismarck, but the biggest city is Fargo, where lots of people live. Even though it's a big state, many people still choose to live in smaller towns and on farms.
Super Tall Towers and Cool Facts!
Did you know North Dakota has a super tall tower? It used to be the tallest man-made thing in the whole Western Hemisphere! It's like stacking 100 skyscrapers on top of each other. Also, some people think the very middle of North America is right in North Dakota. It's a state full of surprises, from its wide-open spaces to its interesting history and modern discoveries.
