Key Facts
Meet the Cree!
Imagine a super-duper big family spread out across a giant playground! That's kind of like the Cree people. They are an Indigenous group, meaning they were here long before others arrived.
There are lots and lots of Cree people, more than 350,000 in Canada! They are like a big team with many smaller teams, like the Plains Cree or the Woodland Cree. They live in many different places, from forests to wide-open fields.
Where Do They Call Home?
The Cree homeland is HUGE! It stretches across a big chunk of Canada, from the east coast all the way to the west. Think of it like a giant blanket covering most of eastern and central Canada. Some Cree people also live in the United States, in a place called Montana. Their traditional lands are full of forests, lakes, and wide-open spaces, perfect for hunting and living with nature.
Trading and Traveling
Long ago, the Cree were super smart traders. They traveled far and wide, trading furs from animals like beavers. This helped them meet other people and explore new places. They even traveled west, becoming known for their skills as hunters and traders. This traveling helped their communities grow and connect with others across the land.
Special Agreements
The Cree have made important agreements, like special promises, with the Canadian government. These are called treaties. One big agreement in Quebec, called the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, was one of the first modern ones. It helped formalize how the Cree and other groups would live and work together with the government in their homelands.
