Where the Wild West Meets the Great Plains!

Imagine a huge, flat land with wide-open spaces perfect for running! That's South Dakota. It's in the middle of the United States, like a giant pancake.

A big river called the Missouri River cuts right through it, making one side feel different from the other. It's a place with four very different seasons, from snowy winters to warm summers. The land is mostly flat, but there are some cool, bumpy mountains in the southwest called the Black Hills.

Stories from Long Ago!

People have lived in South Dakota for thousands of years! The Dakota Sioux tribe has a very long history here and is super important to the state. Later, people from Europe came looking for gold, which caused a lot of changes.

South Dakota became a state a long, long time ago, in 1889. It became a state at the same time as its neighbor, North Dakota! The president even shuffled the papers so no one would know which one became a state first!

Cool Things to See and Do!

Have you ever seen a giant mountain with presidents' faces carved into it? That's Mount Rushmore, and it's in South Dakota! It's a super popular place for visitors.

The state is also home to many Native American reservations, where people keep their traditions alive. Farming is a big deal here, with lots of corn and soybeans growing in the east. In the west, you'll see lots of cattle ranching, where cowboys and cowgirls work with cows.

Who Lives in South Dakota?

South Dakota is named after the Dakota Sioux people, and many of them still live there today. It's not a super crowded place, so there's plenty of room to explore! The biggest city is called Sioux Falls, and the capital is a smaller city named Pierre.

People in South Dakota are proud of their history and their connection to the land. They have a mix of farming and ranching, and many people work in jobs related to tourism, especially near Mount Rushmore.
