Land
Key Facts
Meet Our Big, Dry Home!
Land is all the solid ground on Earth that isn't covered by water, like oceans or lakes. It’s like the Earth’s skin! This dry ground makes up almost a third of our whole planet. It includes all the giant continents and smaller islands. Most of this land is covered in a dusty, rocky blanket called regolith, which is like the Earth’s special soil. It's where trees grow tall and animals roam free.
From Mountains to Deserts: Wow!
Land isn't just flat! It can be super tall mountains that touch the clouds, or vast, sandy deserts where it’s very hot and dry. There are also icy places with snow and glaciers that are colder than your freezer! Sometimes, water from rain and rivers carves out cool shapes in the land, like canyons. It’s like nature’s own art project happening over millions of years!
Land's Amazing Jobs
Land does so many important jobs for our planet. It helps with the water cycle, making sure we have rain and rivers. It’s also part of the carbon cycle, which is like a big breathing system for the Earth. About one-third of all land is covered in forests, which give us air to breathe. Another third is used for growing food, and some parts are covered in ice all year round!
Living on the Land
Long, long ago, the first tiny living things on Earth probably started on land. Today, we need land to build our homes, grow our food, and play. We get fresh water from rivers and lakes that sit on the land. It’s important to take care of our land by planting trees and keeping it clean so it can keep helping us and all the animals.
