Where Does This Giant River Come From?

Imagine a super-long river, the longest in the whole United States! It's called the Missouri River. It starts way up high in the Rocky Mountains, in a place called Montana.

From there, it wiggles and giggles its way for 2,341 miles, which is like driving from New York City all the way to Los Angeles and back! Finally, it joins up with another famous river, the Mississippi River, near a city called St. Louis.

This river is so big it helps water a giant area, bigger than many countries put together!

A River for Explorers and Buffalo!

For thousands of years, people have loved this river. Native American tribes lived here and followed huge herds of bison, also called buffalo, that roamed the grassy plains. These buffalo were super important for food and supplies.

Later, explorers came and used the river like a highway to travel west. They used boats, and sometimes even big steamboats that puffed out steam, to discover new places. It was a busy, exciting time on the water!

Dams, Lakes, and a Changed River

Today, the Missouri River has some amazing helpers called dams. These giant walls of concrete hold back water to make electricity and stop floods. They also created huge, sparkling lakes, like Lake Sakakawea, which is one of the biggest lakes in the country!

But building all these dams changed the river. It's not as twisty as it used to be, and it's even a little shorter now. These changes help boats travel easily, but they also changed the homes for fish and animals.

Why This River is Super Important!

The Missouri River is like a super-tool for people. It helps grow food by watering farms, it gives us clean energy from the dams, and it's still a way to move things on boats. When you put the Missouri and Mississippi rivers together, they make one of the longest river systems in the whole world!

That's like having a super-highway for water that connects lots of places and helps millions of people live and work.
