Key Facts
What Was This 'Iron Curtain'?
The Iron Curtain wasn't a real wall made of metal you could touch. It was more like a big, invisible line that separated countries in Europe after a huge war called World War II. On one side were countries that were friends with the Soviet Union, and on the other side were countries that were friends with the United States and its allies.
It made it really hard for people to travel or talk between these two groups of countries.
Who Put Up This Curtain?
After World War II ended in 1945, the world was a bit shaky. The Soviet Union, a very powerful country, wanted to keep its friends close and its rivals far away. Winston Churchill, a famous leader from the United Kingdom, was the first to call this invisible barrier the 'Iron Curtain' in a speech. He meant that it was a tough, unmovable line that was separating people and ideas.
Life Behind the Curtain
For people living in countries on the Soviet side, life was very different. The government controlled almost everything, like what jobs people had and what news they could hear. It was like having a strict teacher who decided everything for you! Traveling to the other side was almost impossible, and many families were split apart. It made people feel very cut off from the rest of the world.
When Did the Curtain Fall?
The Iron Curtain stayed up for a long, long time, for about 45 years! But people wanted to be free and connect with each other again. In 1989, something amazing happened. The wall that was a real part of the Iron Curtain in Germany, called the Berlin Wall, started to come down. This was a big sign that the Iron Curtain was also falling, and soon, many countries became free again!
