Key Facts
Who Was Idi Amin?
Idi Amin was a soldier who became the leader of Uganda, a country in Africa. He was born a long time ago, in 1928. For many years, he was in charge of the army.
Then, in 1971, he took over the whole country and became president. But he didn't rule like a kind leader; he ruled like a dictator, meaning he made all the decisions himself without listening to others. His time as president was very difficult for the people of Uganda.
From Soldier to President
Idi Amin started his career in the army when Uganda was still ruled by Britain. He was a cook and then became a soldier. He was good at his job and climbed up the ranks.
After Uganda became its own country, he became the commander of the army. But then, he heard that the president was going to arrest him! So, Idi Amin decided to take over the country himself.
He launched a surprise takeover, called a coup, and became the new president in 1971.
A Time of Big Changes
When Idi Amin was president, Uganda went through many changes. At first, some countries helped him, but later, he made friends with different countries. He also made a very big decision to make people of Asian background leave Uganda.
This caused a lot of problems. He even became the leader of a big group of African countries for a year! But his rule became known for being very harsh and causing a lot of suffering for many people.
Leaving Power
Sadly, Idi Amin's time as president ended because of a war. He tried to take over a part of a neighboring country called Tanzania. This made Tanzania very angry, and they fought back. The Tanzanian army and some Ugandan rebels worked together and were able to remove Idi Amin from power in 1979. He then had to leave Uganda and lived in other countries until he passed away in 2003.
