Key Facts
Where Was East Germany?
East Germany, also called the German Democratic Republic, was a country in the middle of Europe. It was like a big puzzle piece in the middle of other countries. To its north was the big Baltic Sea, and to its east was Poland.
It also shared borders with Czechoslovakia and West Germany. Its capital city was East Berlin, which was a special part of the city of Berlin. Think of it like having a favorite playground in the middle of your town!
A Country Built After a Big War
East Germany started after a very big war called World War II. After the war, the land where East Germany would be was looked after by soldiers from the Soviet Union. In 1949, it officially became its own country.
For many years, it was run by a special kind of government that was very strict. Then, in 1989, people started protesting, and things changed a lot, leading to the country joining with West Germany in 1990.
Life Behind the Wall
For a long time, East Germany was famous for the Berlin Wall. This wall was built to stop people from leaving the country. It was super tall, like a building with many floors! Many people wanted to go to West Germany for different reasons. The government tried hard to keep everyone inside. This made life tricky for many families and friends who were separated by the wall.
What Did They Make and Do?
In East Germany, the government decided what everyone would make and do. They had factories that built cars and other machines. They also had farms that grew food. The country tried to be good at making things, even though it had to give some of its money to the Soviet Union after the war. It was the best at making things compared to other countries in that part of Europe.
