Who Was This Leader?

Mobutu Sese Seko was a very important leader in a country called Zaire, which is now called the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He was born Joseph-Désiré Mobutu in 1930. He was the boss, or president, of Zaire for a super long time, from 1971 to 1997! That's longer than many kids are old! He was also a military officer, which means he was in charge of the army.

Changing Everything!

Mobutu was a big deal! In 1971, he changed the name of his country from the Congo to Zaire. Then, in 1972, he even changed his own name from Joseph-Désiré Mobutu to Mobutu Sese Seko Nkuku Ngbendu wa za Banga! He wanted his country to be proud of its own culture and not copy other countries. He also made sure only his political party was allowed, which meant he had a lot of power.

Super Rich Leader?

Mobutu was known for being very wealthy. Some people think he had as much as $5 billion dollars! That's a lot of money, like if every kid in your school had enough money to buy a brand new video game console and lots of games!

He sometimes used fancy ways to travel, like flying on a super-fast airplane called the Concorde just to go shopping in Paris. But while he was rich, the country's money wasn't doing so well.

The End of His Rule

After many years, people in Zaire weren't happy with how things were going. In 1997, new leaders took over the country, and Mobutu had to leave. He went to live in another country called Morocco. Sadly, he was sick and passed away just a few months later in 1997. His time as leader was over, and the country eventually went back to being called the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
