Key Facts
Meet the Giant Ice Blankets!
Ice sheets are like super-duper enormous blankets made of ice. They are so big, they cover more land than a whole country! Think of them as giant frozen puddles that never melt. They are much, much bigger than the ice you see in your freezer or even the ice on a pond. These icy giants are so huge they can stretch for thousands of miles!
Are They Moving?
Even though they look still, ice sheets are always on the move! The ice slowly slides outwards from the middle, like thick honey pouring out. It’s like a very, very slow river of ice. Sometimes, the bottom of the ice sheet gets a little warm from the Earth’s heat. This makes some ice melt, and the water helps the ice slide even faster in certain spots, like a slippery slide!
Where Are These Ice Giants?
Right now, there are only two of these giant ice sheets on Earth. One is covering almost all of Antarctica, which is at the very bottom of the world. The other is covering Greenland, a big island near the North Pole. These places are super cold, which is why the ice can stay there for so long, building up over thousands of years!
Why Ice Sheets Matter!
These giant ice sheets are important because they hold a lot of Earth's fresh water. They also help control our planet's temperature. If they melt too much, it can make the oceans rise, which is not good for places near the sea. Scientists study them to understand how our planet is changing.
