Glaciers: Giant Ice Rivers!

Glaciers are found in very cold places, mostly near the North and South Poles. But guess what? You can find them on tall mountains on almost every continent, even far away from the poles! They love places where it snows a lot and stays cold all year round. Think of them as giant ice blankets covering mountains and land.

It all starts with snow! When it snows more than it melts over many, many years, the snow piles up. The snow at the bottom gets squished by all the snow on top. It turns into super hard, dense ice. This ice is so heavy it starts to slide downhill, like a very, very slow river made of ice!

As glaciers move, they scrape and carve the land beneath them. They can make huge valleys and scoop out deep lakes. Sometimes, they even carry rocks and dirt with them, leaving piles of it behind when they melt. These ice rivers are powerful sculptors of our planet!
