Antarctic Ice Sheet

The Antarctic ice sheet is like a super-duper thick blanket of ice that covers almost the entire continent of Antarctica. It's so big, it's hard to imagine! If you could see it from space, it would look like a giant white patch. This ice is made of snow that has fallen for millions of years and then squished together until it became solid ice. It's the biggest single piece of ice on Earth!

This amazing ice sheet started forming a very, very long time ago, even before dinosaurs walked the Earth! Antarctica used to be a warmer place, but as the Earth cooled down, snow began to pile up. Over millions of years, this snow kept falling and piling up, getting thicker and thicker.

It’s like building a giant snowball, but it took ages and ages to get this big. It's a record of Earth's weather from a long, long time ago.
