Key Facts
Who Was This Adventurer?
Hernán Cortés was a Spanish explorer, like a super-adventurous traveler from a country called Spain. He lived a very long time ago, way back in the 1500s! He was born in a town called Medellín.
Cortés wanted to find new lands and maybe even treasure. He sailed across a giant ocean to a place called the 'New World,' which is now known as the Americas. He was part of a group of explorers who were the first to really explore and change this new part of the world.
Sailing to New Lands!
Cortés decided to lead a big trip, like a giant boat party, to a place called the mainland. The governor of Cuba, who was in charge, told him to stop! But Cortés was so excited to go, he didn't listen.
He sailed anyway! When he arrived, he was super smart. He made friends with some of the people who already lived there and convinced them to help him.
He even had a special helper named Doña Marina who could talk to everyone.
Meeting the Aztecs
Cortés and his friends met a powerful group of people called the Aztecs. The Aztecs had built amazing cities, like one called Tenochtitlan, which was built on an island in a lake! It was like a giant water city.
Cortés's arrival changed everything for the Aztecs. He was very determined and used clever plans to take control of their lands for the King of Spain. It was a huge moment that changed history forever.
What Happened Next?
After Cortés helped change the Aztec Empire, he was given a special title, like a fancy nickname, called the Marquis of the Valley of Oaxaca. This showed he had done something very important. He wrote letters to the King of Spain to tell him all about his adventures.
Later, Cortés went back to Spain and lived out his days there. His journey was a big part of how Spain became a powerful country in the Americas.
