The Amazing Aztec Empire!

Long, long ago, there was a super-powerful group called the Aztecs! They didn't just live in one city, but in an alliance, like a team, of three main cities. The most famous one was Tenochtitlan, which was built on islands in a big lake! It was like a giant water city. These cities worked together to rule a huge area in what is now Mexico. They were amazing builders and warriors!

The Aztecs were very smart rulers. They didn't always fight everyone. Instead, they often made other cities agree to pay them special gifts, like food or colorful feathers, called tribute. If the cities paid, the Aztecs would protect them. It was like a deal: 'You give us presents, and we'll keep you safe!' This helped them control a lot of land without always fighting big wars.

The Aztecs had their own special gods they worshipped. One of their most important gods was Huitzilopochtli, who was a god of war. When they conquered new places, they let people keep their own gods, but they always had to add Huitzilopochtli to their list of gods too! They also built huge temples and pyramids, some as tall as a 15-story building!

The Aztec Empire was super strong for a long time. But then, explorers from a faraway land called Spain arrived. These explorers, called conquistadors, came with their own soldiers and also made friends with some of the people who didn't like the Aztecs. Together, they fought against the Aztecs and eventually took over their empire in 1521. It was a big change for everyone.
