Who Were the Aztecs?

Imagine a super-cool group of people called the Aztecs! They were like the rock stars of their time, living in a place called Mesoamerica, which is now Mexico. They were famous for building amazing things and having a very interesting way of life.

They loved to create beautiful art, tell exciting stories, and even had their own special calendar to keep track of time. They were a powerful and creative civilization!

A City Built on Water!

The Aztecs built their most famous city, Tenochtitlan, right in the middle of a huge lake! It was like building a giant playground on water. They made islands called chinampas, which were like floating gardens, to grow food.

This city was so big and busy, it was one of the largest cities in the world back then. It had tall temples, busy markets, and lots of people walking around. It was a truly magical place!

Super Cool Aztec Stuff!

The Aztecs were super skilled builders and artists. They built huge pyramids that were taller than a giraffe, with temples on top where they would honor their gods. They also loved to play a game called tlachtli, which was kind of like basketball but with a hard rubber ball.

They were also amazing at making jewelry and sculptures out of gold and colorful stones. They even had a special way of writing using pictures called hieroglyphs!

What Happened to Them?

Sadly, the Aztec empire didn't last forever. Around 500 years ago, explorers from a faraway land called Spain arrived. They were led by a man named Hernán Cortés.

The Spanish had different weapons and brought new diseases that the Aztecs weren't used to. This made it very hard for the Aztecs to keep their empire strong, and eventually, their powerful civilization came to an end. But their stories and amazing creations are still remembered today!
