Old World, Meet New World

Key Facts
What is the New World?
Have you ever looked at a map? It shows all the places on Earth. For a long, long time, people in Europe thought the whole world was just Europe, Asia, and Africa.
They called these places the 'Old World'. Then, explorers sailed across the big ocean and found lands that were totally new to them! These new lands, mostly in the Americas, were called the 'New World'.
It was like discovering a secret room in your house you never knew was there!
Who Named It?
A brave explorer named Amerigo Vespucci was sailing around this new place. He wrote a special book about it and said, 'Wow, this isn't Asia, this is a whole new continent!' Because he was so good at describing it, people decided to name these amazing lands after him. So, the big place called America got its name from Amerigo!
It's like if your friend discovered a new toy and everyone called it 'Friend's Toy'!
Why Was It a Big Deal?
Finding the New World was super exciting for people in Europe! It meant there were more places to explore, more things to learn about, and even new plants and animals they had never seen before. Imagine finding a playground with brand new swings and slides you’ve never played on! It changed how people thought about the whole planet and made maps much bigger and more interesting.
Old World vs. New World
So, the 'Old World' was Europe, Asia, and Africa – places people knew about for ages. The 'New World' was the Americas, which were new to Europeans. It’s like the difference between your familiar bedroom (the Old World) and a brand-new, exciting amusement park you’ve never visited (the New World)! This discovery changed everything for explorers and people back home.
