Key Facts
Meet the Giant River!
The Delaware River is a super long river, like a giant blue snake, that wiggles for 282 miles! It starts way up in New York and flows all the way down to the big Atlantic Ocean. It's so special that it's called one of America's 'Great Waters.' This river is like a busy road, but instead of cars, it has boats and lots of amazing animals swimming in it.
It's also a super important drink for millions of people!
Where Did It Come From?
Long, long ago, before anyone built houses or schools, Native American people called the Lenape lived by this river. They called it 'Lenape River' because it was their home. Later, explorers from faraway countries like Holland and England came. They even named the river after a fancy English lord! It's been a super important place for a very, very long time.
A River Full of Life!
This river is like a giant playground for fish and birds! It's a home for so many creatures. It's also a free-flowing river, which means it doesn't have big dams stopping it, so the water can run wild and free. This helps all the animals that live there. It's like a natural water slide for fish trying to swim upstream to have babies!
Why We Love the Delaware!
The Delaware River is like the 'lifeblood' of this part of the country. That means it's super important for everyone! It gives drinking water to about 17 million people, which is more people than live in some whole countries! It also helps boats carry important things to cities like Philadelphia. It's a busy, helpful river that connects lots of places.
