Who Was This Explorer Guy?

Imagine a brave adventurer named Henry Hudson who lived a super long time ago, around the year 1600! He was an English explorer, which means he loved sailing on big ships to see what was over the horizon. He wasn't looking for treasure, but for a special shortcut, a sea path called a passage, that would take ships from Europe all the way to Asia.

He sailed on ships like the 'Half Moon' and explored places that are now parts of Canada and the United States.

Searching for a Secret Shortcut!

Henry Hudson went on many trips. First, he tried to find a way to Asia by sailing way up north, over the icy Arctic. But the ice was too thick!

So, he changed his plan and sailed across the big Atlantic Ocean. He landed in a place called North America. He sailed up a huge river, and guess what?

That river is now called the Hudson River, named just for him! It was like finding a secret highway on the water.

Discovering New Lands!

On his last big adventure, Henry Hudson was still looking for that secret passage. He sailed so far north that he saw a giant bay, bigger than any lake you've ever seen! This place is now called Hudson Bay. He also saw a long strait, which is like a wide river connecting two bigger bodies of water, and it's called Hudson Strait. He was the first European to see these amazing places!

A Sad Ending to an Amazing Journey

After a long, cold winter, Henry Hudson wanted to keep exploring. But his crew was tired and wanted to go home. Sadly, some of the sailors argued with Henry and his son. They put Henry, his son, and a few other men into a small boat and sent them off into the water. No one knows for sure what happened to them after that. It’s a sad end to a brave explorer’s story.
