Long ago, people who loved to paint and write found the Catskills to be a super inspiring place. They would look at the beautiful views and create amazing art. Later, in the middle of the 1900s, lots of people from New York City would come here for vacation to escape the busy city. Many funny comedians also got their start telling jokes in the big hotels that used to be here!

The Catskills are like a giant treasure chest filled with nature! Most of the Catskills are protected as a huge park, which means people try to keep it wild and beautiful. This helps all the plants and animals that live there. Imagine trees taller than a giraffe and streams that sparkle in the sun. It’s a special place where nature gets to be the star of the show.
Who Named These Mountains?
The very first people from Europe to explore this area were called Dutch settlers. They were the ones who looked at these amazing mountains and decided to give them their name: the Catskills! It’s a name that has stuck around for hundreds of years, and now everyone knows and loves this special part of New York.
