New York City

New York City, or NYC for short, is a super exciting place located at the very bottom of New York State. It sits right on a giant, beautiful harbor called New York Harbor. This harbor is so big, it's one of the largest natural harbors in the whole world!

The city is made up of five different parts called boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Think of them like five big neighborhoods that all come together to make one giant, amazing city. It's a place where lots of people live close together, making it a very busy and lively spot.

A very, very long time ago, around 1624, Dutch explorers came and built a small trading post on an island called Manhattan. They called their new home New Amsterdam. Later, the English took over and renamed it New York, after a Duke!

For a little while, New York City was even the capital of the whole United States. In 1898, the five big boroughs we know today all joined together to become the New York City we see now. It's grown from a tiny settlement to a giant, world-famous city!
