Meet Europe's Giant Mountains!

The Alps are like a huge, bumpy backbone for Europe! They stretch for a super long way, about as far as driving from your house to the beach and back many times. These mountains are so tall, some of them poke way up into the clouds. They are found in eight different countries, like France, Italy, and Switzerland. It’s like a giant playground for nature!

How Did They Get So Big?

These mountains are super old, like millions and millions of years old! They were made when two giant pieces of Earth’s crust, called tectonic plates, bumped into each other. Imagine two big rugs pushing together – they wrinkle up in the middle.

That’s kind of what happened to the ground, pushing it up, up, up to make the tall peaks we see today. Some are so high, they are taller than 100 giraffes stacked on top of each other!

Home to Cool Critters and Plants!

Even though it looks snowy and cold, lots of amazing animals call the Alps home. There are special mountain goats called ibex that can climb super steep rocks! You might also find fluffy marmots whistling to each other. And look out for the pretty edelweiss flower, which has fuzzy white petals and can grow in rocky places, even high up where it’s cold. It’s a tough little flower!

Adventures Through Time!

People have lived in the Alps for a very, very long time, even before castles were built! Explorers like Hannibal once crossed these mountains with elephants, which must have been a wild sight. Later, Napoleon also led his army through the snowy passes. Today, people visit the Alps for fun, like skiing and hiking, and to see the beautiful views. It’s a place full of adventure!
