Key Facts
Rivers, Seas, and Canals: Where Do Boats Go?
Imagine a giant, watery road! That's a waterway. Some waterways are natural, like big rivers that flow to the sea, or even the huge oceans themselves. Others are man-made, like canals that are dug by people to connect different bodies of water or to make shortcuts. Boats of all sizes use these watery paths to travel from one place to another, carrying people and fun things!
Can Boats Really Fit?
For a boat to travel on a waterway, the water needs to be just right. It has to be deep enough so the boat doesn't bump its bottom on the ground. It also needs to be wide enough so the boat can pass through without getting stuck. Plus, there can't be any big rocks or waterfalls blocking the way, or special locks that lift boats up and down like elevators!
Boats Big and Small!
Waterways are used by all sorts of boats. Some are tiny, pulled by animals, carrying just a few things. Others are super-duper enormous, like giant cruise ships that are longer than a football field and carry thousands of people! These big ships travel on the widest and deepest waterways, like oceans and large rivers, carrying goods and people all around the world.
Why Waterways Are Awesome!
Waterways are super important because they help us move things and visit places. Think about all the toys you have, or the food you eat β a lot of it might have traveled on a boat through a waterway! People are even trying to make more waterways cleaner and use special boats that don't make pollution, to help our planet.
