Meet the Emperor's Toughest Friends!

The Varangian Guard were like the ultimate bodyguards for the emperors of a faraway land called the Byzantine Empire. They weren't from there, though! Most of them came from cold, northern places like Scandinavia, which is where the famous Vikings lived.

They were super brave and strong, and the emperor trusted them with his life. They were so important that they even had their own special name, 'Varangian Guard'.

Where Did These Mighty Warriors Come From?

These warriors came from places like Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. Later, after a big change in England, many brave fighters from England joined them too! They traveled a long way to join the emperor's team. It was like a big adventure for them, leaving their homes to become part of this famous guard. They were known for being loyal, which meant they wouldn't betray the emperor.

Why Were They So Special?

The emperors wanted guards who didn't have family or friends in the empire. This way, the guards wouldn't be tempted to help their own people if there was trouble. The Varangian Guard were also amazing fighters. They often fought in the most dangerous parts of battles, helping the emperor win important wars. They were like the emperor's secret weapon!

The Guard's Coolest Jobs!

Besides protecting the emperor, the Varangian Guard got to go on exciting adventures and fight in many battles. They were so good at fighting that they often decided who won the battles! They were like the superheroes of the Byzantine army. Even though they were from far away, they became a very important part of the empire's history for hundreds of years.
