Where Did the Normans Come From?

A long, long time ago, in 1066, a group of brave warriors called the Normans sailed across the sea from a place called Normandy. Normandy is in a country we now call France. They were led by a strong leader named William, who wanted to become the King of England.

He had a big army with lots of knights in shiny armor and strong archers. They were ready for a huge adventure to change England's story!

The Big Battle for the Crown!

The most important fight happened on a hill called Senlac Hill. The English king, Harold, had an army of soldiers with axes and shields. William and his Norman knights had horses and swords. It was a super tough battle that lasted all day! Imagine a playground game that goes on and on, but with real swords and shields! In the end, William's army won, and he became known as William the Conqueror.

A New King, A New Language!

When William became king, he brought his own language, which was a bit like French, to England. The people in England spoke a different language called Old English. Over time, these languages mixed together, and it's why English today has so many words that sound a bit French! It's like if you and your friends started talking and made up a new secret language together.

Building Castles and Changing England

After winning, William wanted to make sure everyone knew he was in charge. So, the Normans built lots of strong stone castles all over England. These castles were like giant fortresses, much bigger and stronger than any playground fort! They helped the Normans control the land and keep the peace. This big change, called the Norman Conquest, changed England forever!
