Meet the Maritime Provinces!

The Maritimes are like a special club of three Canadian provinces: New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. They are all on the big, blue Atlantic Ocean! Think of them as Canada's eastern doorstep, where the land meets the sea. These provinces are part of a bigger group called Atlantic Canada, and they are super important for Canada's history and its connection to the ocean.

Who Lived Here First?

Long, long ago, before anyone else arrived, the Mi'kmaq, Wolastoqiyik, and Passamaquoddy people called this land home. They knew the forests and the waters very well. Later, people from France called Acadians and people from Britain came to live here too, starting in the 1600s. They all helped shape what the Maritimes are like today.

Why Are They So Special?

The Maritimes are special because they are right on the ocean! This means they have lots of cool bays and gulfs, like the Gulf of Maine and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. These waters are full of life and have been super important for people living there for a very long time. Also, the Maritimes are one hour ahead of places like Quebec, so they get to see the sunrise a little bit sooner!

A Big Idea for Canada!

Guess what? The Maritimes played a big role in creating Canada as we know it! Back in 1864, leaders met in a place called Charlottetown (which is in Prince Edward Island!) to talk about joining different parts of Canada together. This meeting was a super important step that helped form the whole country. So, the Maritimes are like a birthplace for Canada!
