Where Did Sweden Get So Big?

Once upon a time, Sweden wasn't just Sweden! For about 100 years, from 1611 to 1721, it was like a giant superhero that stretched its arms all around the Baltic Sea. It even had lands near the North Sea and a place called New Sweden across the ocean! This was a time when Sweden was super powerful and important in Europe, like the most popular kid on the playground.

King Gustavus Adolphus, the Super Leader!

The adventure really kicked off with a brave king named Gustavus Adolphus. He became king in 1611 and was a fantastic leader. He helped Sweden win many battles and become a great power. After he sadly passed away in 1632, other smart people, like the Oxenstierna family, helped lead the country, especially when the kings were too young to rule.

Big Battles and New Lands!

Sweden fought in big wars, like the Thirty Years' War, and won! Because they were so good at fighting, they got to keep new lands in places like Germany. They even fought a big war against Denmark-Norway and won so much land that Denmark-Norway had to give up a third of its country! That's like winning so many games of tag that the other team has to give you their favorite toy.

Uh Oh, The Empire Shrinks!

But even superheroes have tough times. A king named Charles XII was a great fighter, but he led Sweden on a big adventure into Russia that didn't go so well. After a big defeat, Sweden started to lose its lands. By the time Charles XII died, the giant empire was much smaller. Eventually, Sweden lost all its lands outside of Sweden, like Finland, and the super big empire was no more.
