Fun Fact
A summit is the highest point around it, like the very top of a playground slide!

Where the Land Touches the Clouds!

Imagine standing on the highest point of a hill, where everything else is lower than you. That's a summit! It's like the very top of a giant's hat. Mountains have these special high spots, and sometimes even roads have a highest point called a summit, like a special marker on a long journey. It's the place where you can see the farthest!

The Tallest of Them All!

The most famous summit in the whole world is on Mount Everest. It's so high, it's like stacking 17 Eiffel Towers on top of each other! Two brave explorers, Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary, were the first to officially reach its peak in 1953. They climbed all the way to the very top, which is super hard work!

What's a Sub-Summit?

Sometimes, a mountain has a few high points. If a high spot isn't quite the highest, but it's still pretty tall and a bit away from the very top, it's called a sub-summit. It's like a smaller peak on the side of a bigger one. These are still important parts of the mountain, just not the absolute highest point.

Snowy Hats and Rocky Heads!

Some summits are covered in thick ice and snow all year round, like a giant ice cream cone! When people measure how high these summits are, they sometimes measure the highest rock underneath or the highest point of the ice. It depends on what they want to know, but either way, it's super high up!
